I Chronicles 29:11 "Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty:for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all."

You're Just Making It Worse!

"Exo 7:10-12 And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent.
Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.
For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods."

"Exo 7:20-22 And Moses and Aaron did so, as the LORD commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and smote the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood.
And the fish that was in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river; and there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.
And the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, neither did he hearken unto them; as the LORD had said."

"Exo 8:6-7 And Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt; and the frogs came up, and covered the land of Egypt.
And the magicians did so with their enchantments, and brought up frogs upon the land of Egypt."

Can you see a pattern here? Everything that Moses and Aaron did, the magicians of Pharaoh tried to copy. And some of it they did successfully. As I was reading this story the other day, I was thinking to myself 'Don't I do that sometimes too?'

Let me explain.

It's obvious to me that Pharaoh's magicians were out to prove that they were as strong and powerful as the God of Moses and Aaron, and that they could dish out whatever He did. The only problem was, they were only making things worse for themselves. I mean, you'd think the rod/serpent thing would have been a sign of what was to come. Aaron's rod swallowed theirs. They didn't get them back. Obviously God was sending them a message that He was bigger and stronger.

But they didn't get it.

So Moses obeys the Lord and plagues the land with water turned to blood, and frogs all over the place. These are the only two of the ten plagues the magicians can copy. But cope them they did! And think of this: everything they did in their pride only made things worse!

They turned MORE water to blood, which limited the Egyptians drinking even further, they added MORE frogs in the land so that they all suffered worse than what the Lord originally had done.

Does that sound familiar?

Ok, so maybe you're not turning water to blood, or making frogs cover the land, but my point is, maybe you've acted in your pride before (like I have) and made an already bad situation worse. Let's look at one more example.

"Exo 8:17-19 And they did so; for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the earth, and it became lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.
And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not: so there were lice upon man, and upon beast.
Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said."

The magicians didn't make lice, but the shocking thing is that THEY TRIED TO. Have you ever had lice? I have, in fourth grade. Have you seen my hair? I can guarantee it was NOT a fun time. Hours of sitting in a chair and letting my Mom comb through my curly mass with an itty-bitty fine tooth comb...I was miserable! Why the magicians would want to attempt to make MORE lice is beyond me.

But they couldn't do it. It was only after they failed in their own strength that they finally registered that it was God doing these things, and not Moses and Aaron.

How many times is that true in our lives? We're faced with a tough situation, something that has really thrown us for a loop. Maybe something we've never experienced before. But we are pretty sure God has allowed it for some reason. And instead of recognizing He is still in control, we react in pride instead of submitting to His will. And it's only later we realize (after we've made a bigger mess of things) that it was God working all along.

So then, not only does He finish with what He started (like ending each plague) but He cleans up our mess as well (like He did with the things the magicians created- they didn't make it stop on their own, they could only get it started).

Just some thoughts that were tumbling around in my brain this morning, as I thought over what I've been reading. Have you ever been a "magician"? How did you realize God was working, and that you were just making it a big mess?

Hope you have a blessed day.

You know, that is just really crazy that they tried to make lice. I never even thought of it that way.

And you are right--they did make their own suffering worse with the blood and frogs.

Good thoughts Julie! I am now processing through all that to think of times when I have done that...

    Thanks for sharing!

Good thoughts. I had never thought about it that way before. Thanks for the perspective.
